Joint Prayer for Abyei Issue, June 12, 2011

Scriptures:

  1. 1 Kings 21:1-24
  2. Deut. 19:14.

Theme: God’s wrath on those who usurped

Three things to Discuss:

  1. Every family being appointed to a particular place, that their posterity might possess is for the purpose for which God has gave it to their forefathers
  2. God has given sufficient limits to all, so that is not needful to invade others
  3. God bring into justice usurpers because of their covetous and dissatisfaction with place God has located them

Before I discuss what happen to King Ahab and his wife Jezebel on taking vineyard which belong to Naboth let see what Apostle Paul wrote in the book of Acts about God’s policy on earth. In (Acts 17:26) it says, “From one man he made every nation of men that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.” This indicated that God has set this world to be inhabited according to His policy-Be satisfied to where God has given to you but not to invade others in order to take their land.

Relevant scriptures

People should not be restless and dissatisfied with the place God has located them because He put them there.

Deut. 32:8 it
says “When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided all mankind; he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the 12 sons of Israel.

Psalm 74:17 it says “It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer
and winter.”

Jeremiah 27:5
it says “With my great power and outstretched arm I made the earth and its people and the animals that are on it, and I give it to anyone I please.”

God even forbid illegal move of boundaries

Deut. 19:14 it says “Do not move your neighbor’s boundary stone set up by your predecessors in the inheritance you
received in the land LORD your God is giving you to possess.”

Deut. 27:17 “curse is the man who moves his neighbor’s boundary stones.”

Job 24:2 “Men move boundary stone; they pasture flocks they have stolen.”

Proverbs 23:10-11 “Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless for their Defender
is strong; he will take up their case against you”

Let see the fate of covetous Ahab who murdered Naboth because of his vineyard

History Background of Landmark

When children of Israel settled in their promised land, it was eventually divided among 12 tribes of Israel. Each tribe
had specific portion given to them. It was sacred trust because this was tied to Abrahamic covenant-(The law which God had given them said that they were not to sell their land, but pass it on from father to son).

In scripture, (1 Kings 21:1-24). Ahab was king of Samaria and lives close to Naboth, the owner of Vineyard at Jezreel. Because the vineyard was well kept and close to him Ahab became covetous at this vineyard and thought what a fine garden it would make for his palace. One day as Naboth was working in his vineyard the king came to him and said v2 “Let me have your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth. v3”But Naboth replied, “The LORD forbids that I should give you the inheritance
of my fathers.”

This made Ahab very angry and he refuses to eat, drink, or talk to people because Naboth refused to sell his vineyard to him.

The king’s wife letter to Naboth’s city

After Jezebel, his wife understood what bother her husband she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and Nobles who lived in Naboth’s city with him. In those letters she wrote v9 “Proclaim a day of fasting
and seat Naboth in a prominent place among people. V10 But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify that he has cursed both God and king. Then take him out and stone him to death.”

Jezebel’s conspiracy is now fulfill, the innocent Naboth is kill and the king’s family took over his property

God’s message to Ahab

God spoke to Elijah the prophet and said v17-23 “Go to Ahab and give him a message from Me.” Ahab was surprised to see Elijah and said to him, “Have you found me, my enemy?” Elijah answered, “I have found you because you have sold yourself to do evil in the sight of God. God will punish you for this. All of your sons will die or be killed and all of your family will be taken away. In the place where Naboth died the dogs shall lick your blood. Your wife Jezebel shall be eaten by dogs. All this is because of your wickedness.”

Ahab’s family in ruin

Not long after this Ahab was killed in battle. He had been in his chariot and an archer shot an
arrow through his body. They brought the chariot back to the pool at Samaria to
be washed. There at the very place where Naboth had been killed the dogs licked
up Ahab’s blood from the chariot.(follow the death of Ahab in v29-37).

Ahab’s son Ahazia (1king 22:51) became king, but not many years had passed before judgment had fallen on the whole family just as God had said. All of his sons were killed. Jezebel met her death in a dreadful way. Servants threw her from an upstairs
window into a courtyard where she was killed. The dogs ate her flesh, just as God had said.

Whatever God said must accomplish what it was for. (Isaiah 55:11) “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” The word of the LORD which He said through Elijah remain as curse in Ahab’s family, even after the death of Elijah,(follow the story in chapters below) his wife was threw from upstairs window, killed and the dog ate her flesh (2 Kings 9:30-37) and all his children were killed (2 Kings 10:1-11).

Conclusion

As we convent here today to seek God’s intervention in Abyei issue, we need to remember that the birth right in the region of Abyei belongs to nine chiefdoms of Ngok Dinka. It is the land passed down to them by their ancestors and it will remain with
their children and the generations to come.

God has given sufficient limits to all, so that it is not needful to invade others. He is the only one who creates all nations and determines who should live where by putting boundaries. Therefore, people should not be restless and dissatisfied with
place God has located them.

Wars of conquest are evil and God vehemently resent them. Look at Ahab and his wife Jezebel, they thought killing Naboth will give them complete ownership for the vineyard. But instead of ownership they invited curse into their family including children who might have been innocent. This indicates that God is a strong Defender for those oppressed. (Proverbs 23:10-11) “Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you.”

As Christian Whom do we take our Grievances to?

God is a only one who can solved our grievances, to see how His people in Abyei, Southern Kordofan, Nuba Mountains, Darfur and other parts of Sudan including South who have been mistreated, displaced, and exposed to unspeakable death in their own land. But to obtain God’s mercy we have to come before him with sincere prayers. In (2 Chronicles 7:14) “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” We all know that nothing happen in this world without God causing it. (AMos 3:6b).”When disaster comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?” Therefore, when such devastated event happened we have to come back to Him with genuine prayer to seek His mercy.

Finally, as God’s wrath fall on King Ahab, his wife Jezebel, and their children for killing Naboth because of his vineyard, the
inheritance land of his ancestors. It was God total responsibility to pay back Ahab for his covetous deed. In the same way it is God responsibility to intervene and rescue innocent people from cruel usurpers. And to find ways of changing the hearts of those who plan evil against innocent civilians in Abyei and all over Sudan who are massacred in their forefathers and posterity soil. In (Proverbs 21:1) “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.”
AMEN.

To our Christian’s friends, wherever you may be, let lift up Sudan into God’s hand. This country has been a well of death for
many years and the shedding of blood has never stopped ever since. We need God to intervene and restore peace. The pressing need at this time is: the independence of soon to be the Republic of South Sudan which will be in July 9, 2011, Abyei issue, upheaval in Southern Kordofan, Nuba Mountains and Darfur.

Thanks for adding Sudan into your Prayer’s list.

God bless you.
